Why did ChatGPT stop citing Reddit, and does it matter to you?
In four days in August 2026, Reddit went from roughly one in every 26 links ChatGPT showed to about one in 200. The story got told as Reddit falling out of favour. What actually changed was the measuring, and probably the searching.
Reddit's share of the links shown by ChatGPT Search fell from 3.83% to 0.52% between early and mid August 2026, a fall of 86.4%, according to the tracking firm Promptwatch. Google's AI answers barely moved over the same weeks. Nobody has explained the drop, the firm that measured it says a fault in its own collection is still possible, and a fall this size happened in September 2025 and reversed.
What actually happened in August 2026?
One website's share of the links ChatGPT shows underneath its answers collapsed in four days. Promptwatch, a firm that watches AI answers and counts the pages they quote, reported that Reddit averaged 3.83% of the sources cited by ChatGPT Search between 18 July and 7 August 2026, then averaged 0.52% between 14 and 17 August. That is a relative fall of 86.4%.1
Put in plainer terms: Reddit went from about one link in every 26 that ChatGPT put on screen to roughly one in 200. Forbes reported the same figures and noted Reddit had peaked at 4.14% of ChatGPT Search citations in April 2026.5
Two things are worth holding on to before the explanations start. The first is that this is a share, not a count. If ChatGPT starts showing many more links per answer, a site can hold steady in absolute terms and still shrink as a proportion. The second is that Promptwatch says openly that its data shows when the shift happened and not why, and that it cannot yet rule out a fault in its own collection.2
Did Google's AI answers do the same thing?
No, and that is the most useful part of the whole story. Over the same period Promptwatch measured Reddit's share of the links in Google's AI Overviews, the summaries that sit above ordinary results, going from 2.37% in the first seven days to 2.10% in the last seven, a fall of 11.3%. In Google's AI Mode it went from 2.22% to 1.54%, a fall of 30.5%.1
A cliff in one product and a gentle slope in two others is not what it looks like when the public goes off a website. It is what it looks like when one company changes how its software goes looking for things.
Why did it happen?
The honest answer is that nobody outside OpenAI knows, and the leading theory does not quite fit the dates.
The theory is about how ChatGPT searches. When you ask it something, it does not run the one question you typed. It quietly runs several related searches of its own and reads what comes back. On 8 August 2026 the shape of those background searches changed sharply: Promptwatch recorded searches aimed at one named website, the kind written as site:example.com, going from about 0.37% of them to 16.8% in a single day. The average number of searches behind each answer nearly doubled at the same time, from about 1.08 to 1.83.3
That would explain a shift away from Reddit, because asking a named site directly tends to mean asking an official site, a manufacturer, a government page. You do not go to a forum by name for a fact.
The problem is the calendar. The searching changed on 8 August and Reddit's share only dipped modestly. The floor fell out on 14 August, six days later, and Search Engine Journal points out that no one has explained that second date at all.4 Reddit's own spokesperson said the site "remains one of the most-cited domains according to other reports" and that it gets most of its visits directly and through ordinary search rather than from AI tools. OpenAI has not explained the change.5
Measured
- Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search links fell from 3.83% to 0.52% between 7 and 14 August 2026.
- Searches aimed at one named site went from 0.37% to 16.8% of ChatGPT's background searches on 8 August.
- Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode fell 11.3% and 30.5% over the same weeks.
- Reddit peaked at 4.14% of ChatGPT Search links in April 2026.
Still unexplained
- Why the large fall came on 14 August, six days after the search change.
- Whether the counting itself was affected, which the firm that did it says it cannot rule out.
- What OpenAI changed, since it has not said.
- Whether the fall lasts, given the same thing reversed in 2025.
Did Reddit turn the machines away?
This was the explanation doing the rounds within a day: that Reddit had slammed its door on the automated readers that AI companies use, and the citations died with the access. It is a tidy story. We checked it, because it is checkable.
Nearly every website has a small file called robots.txt sitting at the top of it, which tells automated visitors what they are allowed to look at. Anyone can read it, including you. On 24 August 2026 we fetched reddit.com/robots.txt and found a blanket instruction turning away all automated readers, and the server reported the file as last changed on 1 July 2024.6
Copies saved by the Internet Archive on 7 August and on 16 August 2026, on either side of the fall, carry the same instruction as each other. Whatever happened on 14 August, a door that had been open on the Wednesday was not closed on the Friday. It had already been shut for two years.
| When it was read | Who read it | What it said |
|---|---|---|
| 7 August 2026 | Internet Archive | All automated readers turned away from the whole site |
| 16 August 2026 | Internet Archive | The same instruction, unchanged |
| 24 August 2026 | Frontpage AI | The same instruction. Server reported the file as last changed on 1 July 2024 |
That does not prove Reddit changed nothing. Access for AI companies is mostly governed by paid agreements now, not by that file, and none of us can see those contracts. What it does show is that the most repeated explanation was never checked by the people repeating it, and it took one command to find out.
Has this happened before?
Yes, eleven months earlier, and it came back. Profound, which has analysed more than 4 billion AI citations and 300 million answers between August 2024 and late October 2025, recorded Reddit's share in ChatGPT falling from about 7% to about 1% during September 2025. Reddit stayed the second most-cited site on ChatGPT throughout, behind Wikipedia, and had recovered to about 3% by the time Profound published, in line with the previous spring.7
of all the links Profound saw across every AI engine it tracks came from Reddit, measured over 4 billion citations from August 2024 to late October 2025. Reddit ranked first on Perplexity, second on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Grok, third on Google AI Mode and thirty-first on Microsoft Copilot.7
The cause of that 2025 fall is the part worth remembering. Search Engine Journal reported it was later put down to Google removing a search setting that data collectors relied on to gather results in bulk.4 In other words, the thing that changed was the tape measure. Reddit had not become less useful to anybody, and the graph still fell off a cliff.
Why do three tools give three different numbers?
Because they are counting different things, and none of them is lying. Ask how much of ChatGPT comes from Reddit and you can get 3.83%, 3.11% or close to 60% depending on who you ask, all published in good faith.
Promptwatch counted what share of the links on screen were Reddit links. Profound counted the same kind of thing across every engine it tracks and a much longer period. Semrush, analysing more than 230,000 prompts between 14 July and 12 October 2025, counted something else entirely: whether Reddit turned up at all in an answer. By that measure ChatGPT cited Reddit in close to 60% of prompt responses in early August 2025, falling to around 10% by mid-September.8
| Who measured | What they counted | Period | The number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Promptwatch | Share of the links ChatGPT Search put on screen | 18 July to 7 August 2026 | 3.83% |
| Profound | Share of the links across every AI engine it tracks | August 2024 to late October 2025 | 3.11% |
| Semrush | Whether Reddit appeared at all in an answer | Early August 2025 | Close to 60% |
This is worth more to you than the Reddit story itself. If you ever pay for a report telling you your visibility in AI search went up or down by some percentage, the first question is what was counted, and the second is whether the same thing was counted the same way last month. We wrote separately about what those checking tools can and cannot tell you.
Does any of this matter for a UK service business?
Directly, almost not at all, and it is worth being blunt about why. Every figure in this article is drawn from whole-web measurement, weighted towards the large brands and product questions these firms are paid to track, and mostly from the United States. None of it separates out what an engine says when someone asks for an emergency electrician in Preston.
Reddit was never the thing standing between a one-van business and a customer. It gets quoted when someone asks which laptop to buy or whether a supplement works, not when someone asks who fixes boilers nearby. If your name has never appeared in a Reddit thread, its share of ChatGPT's links falling to 0.52% took nothing away from you.
The habit underneath the story is real, though. Ofcom reports 1.8 billion UK visits to ChatGPT in the first eight months of 2025, against 368 million in the same period of 2024, and says about 30% of searches now show an AI summary, with 53% of adults seeing those summaries often.9 BrightLocal found 45% of consumers had used an AI tool to find a local business, up from 6% a year earlier, though that survey covered 1,002 US adults and there is no published UK equivalent for service businesses.10
So people are asking. What the August figures tell you is not who they trust. It is that the plumbing behind the answer can be rebuilt overnight, by one company, without notice, and that whichever website was benefiting most from the old arrangement had no say in it.
What to do instead of watching one number
Own the parts of the record that survive a platform changing its mind. One website's fortunes in one product moved 86% in four days. The facts about your business did not move at all, and that asymmetry is the whole lesson.
Three things stay useful whichever way the wiring goes:
- Your own site, saying the plain facts in plain words. Your trade, the towns you cover, your hours, your prices if you publish them. When a search runs against one named site, the site it names is usually the official one, and yours is the only official one about you.
- Your Google Business Profile, complete and current. It feeds both Google's AI answers and a good deal of what other tools read about you.
- Other people's honest accounts of you. Reviews, a mention in a local group, a supplier's page listing you as an installer. Whether any single one of those sites is in favour this month matters less than there being several of them.
Most of that you can do yourself in an afternoon, and plenty of businesses do. If you would rather it was somebody's job, that is ours. Frontpage AI is a UK studio that builds and manages websites for independent service businesses, structured so that Google and AI answer engines can read, trust and name them. We work only with UK service businesses such as trades, clinics, salons and instructors, and charge from £88 per month on a 30 day rolling contract with no setup fee. There is more on how we approach it on our page about being found in AI search.
And when the next collapse gets reported, check the file yourself before you rearrange anything. It took us one command and about ten seconds to find out that the popular explanation for this one had been sitting unchanged since 2024.
- Reddit's share of the links shown by ChatGPT Search fell from 3.83% between 18 July and 7 August 2026 to 0.52% between 14 and 17 August 2026, a relative fall of 86.4%, as measured by Promptwatch.
- Google's AI Overviews fell 11.3% and Google's AI Mode fell 30.5% over the same weeks, so the cliff was specific to one company's product.
- Searches aimed at a single named website went from 0.37% to 16.8% of ChatGPT's background searches on 8 August 2026, six days before the large fall, which nobody has yet explained.
- Reddit's file telling automated visitors what they may read was unchanged either side of the fall and is dated 1 July 2024, so the widely repeated explanation that Reddit blocked the crawlers that week is not supported.
- A fall from about 7% to about 1% in September 2025 was later attributed to a change in how data was collected, and Reddit's share had recovered to about 3% by November 2025.
- Published figures for Reddit's presence in ChatGPT range from 3.11% to close to 60% because different firms count different things, so no visibility number means anything without knowing what was counted.
Common questions
Did Reddit block ChatGPT from reading its pages?
Not in that week, on the evidence available. Reddit's robots.txt file, the small file at the top of nearly every website telling automated visitors what they may look at, turns away all automated readers by default, and it has done since well before this. We fetched it on 24 August 2026 and the server reported the file as last changed on 1 July 2024. Copies saved by the Internet Archive on 7 and 16 August 2026, either side of the fall, carry the same instruction. So a fresh block that week is not supported by what we can see.
Is Reddit still worth posting on for a small business?
There is no published research on whether Reddit posts win work for UK service businesses, so treat any confident answer as an opinion rather than a finding. What the August 2026 figures show is narrower than most headlines suggest: the number of Reddit links ChatGPT displayed fell, which is not the same as a customer no longer reading a Reddit thread. Most subreddits also have rules against self-promotion, and being caught breaking them tends to cost more than the thread was worth.
Why do AI visibility tools give different numbers for the same thing?
Because they count different things. Promptwatch reported Reddit at 3.83% of the links ChatGPT Search showed in the weeks to 7 August 2026. Profound reported 3.11% across all the engines it tracks between August 2024 and late October 2025. Semrush reported that ChatGPT cited Reddit in close to 60% of prompt responses in early August 2025, because it counted whether Reddit appeared at all in an answer rather than what share of the links it took. All three can be right at once.
Has a fall like this reversed before?
Yes, once. Profound recorded Reddit's citation share in ChatGPT falling from about 7% to about 1% in September 2025, and reported that it had since recovered to about 3%, in line with the previous spring. Search Engine Journal reported that the September 2025 fall was later attributed to Google removing a search setting that data collectors relied on, which is a change in how the measuring was done rather than a change in what ChatGPT valued.
Does the drop mean small businesses get named more often instead?
Nobody has published anything that shows that. The measurement covers the whole web across large brand-level samples, mostly in the United States, and none of it separates out what an engine says when someone asks for a plumber in Harrogate. A change in which large sites get quoted does not by itself tell you anything about whether your business gets named.
